Turn-of-the-Century Appeal

Originally named for its location as the highest point on a portion of the historic Chatham Railroad, Apex has a quiet, small-town atmosphere and features a walkable downtown with a wide variety of local shopping and dining options. It is only 20 minutes away from Raleigh via the historic NC Route 1, which is why it was one of the earliest towns to develop in the area after the Civil War. Residents also appreciate Apex’s close proximity to Jordan Lake via Highway 64 Apex, and to Research Triangle Park and Raleigh Durham International Airport (RDU) via I-540. First settled in the 1860s and later incorporated in 1873, Apex is considered one of North Carolina’s best-preserved turn-of-the-century railroad towns. You can still find many well-preserved historical homes and commercial buildings here. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the downtown district is home to specialty gift and antique shops as well as topnotch restaurants. If you’re a train enthusiast, North Carolina Railroad Museum offers rides on trains restored to their former glory.
